I'm originally from Boston and lived in LA for eight years before moving overseas. My husband and I have been living in Sydney for three years now and so these are our adventures living in the Southern Hemisphere.
1. Recycle at Home. Find out where to recycle in your area at http://Earth911.org. 2. Switch to Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) in your home and office. Compact fluorescent bulbs use two-thirds less energy and last 10 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs. 3. Wash your clothes in cold water. It uses less energy and gets them just as clean. 4. Save water. Take shorter showers and run the dishwasher only when it's full. Check out low-flow shower heads which saves gallons of water from each shower. 5. Turn off your computer completely- DON'T leave it in standby mode. 6. Unplug appliances and electronics from the outlets when not in use. 7. Use reusable shopping bags instead of plastic bags everytime you shop. If you do have plastic bags make sure you re-use them again. 8. Turn down your thermostat. 9. Cancel your catalogues. Call 888-5-OPTOUT or get off the lists at http://NewDream.org. Make sure to recycle what you do receive. 10. Bring your own mug to Starbucks. You'll get a 10-cent discount, and it's one less paper cup to end up in a landfill.
